Dignio

Empowering people to live healthier and better lives

As UX Lead at Dignio, I drove the strategic alignment of a connected care ecosystem spanning hardware, patient apps, and clinical tools, ensuring safe, scalable medication management for elderly and chronically ill users.

Key Challenges

Dignio’s platform played an important role in enabling remote patient care, but several usability issues limited its effectiveness. Fragmented workflows across the patient app, clinician tools, and Karie software created uncertainty in medication management, where clarity is directly tied to safety.

Complex medication journeys introduced significant cognitive load, especially for elderly users who rely on clear guidance and predictable interactions. Inconsistent patterns between the app and device made the experience less coherent and made it harder for patients and caregivers to build trust in the system.

Unclear or missing status states increased the risk of missed or incorrect doses, while low clarity during physical setup created onboarding friction for both caregivers and patients. In a healthcare context, those gaps were not just usability issues, but potential safety risks.

Approach

We prioritized clarity and cognitive load reduction across the entire medication experience, from unboxing and first-time setup to daily use and remote monitoring. Rather than treating the device, app, and clinician tools as separate components, we defined a cohesive interaction model that tied the physical dispenser and the digital interface into one predictable system.

This meant aligning interaction patterns across the device interface, mobile app, and monitoring platform so users encountered consistent and understandable behavior at every touchpoint. Medication intake and reminder flows were simplified to reduce steps and improve clarity, particularly for users with lower digital literacy. Safety-critical moments were supported with carefully designed microcopy and clear status states to prevent misinterpretation.

At the same time, clinician dashboards were refined to give clearer visibility into patient adherence, enabling faster intervention when alerts occurred. The onboarding journey was redesigned end-to-end, from intuitive unboxing and safe first use to contextual on-device guidance and progressive support for more experienced users.

Outcome and Strategic Impact

By improving clarity across device, app, and backend interactions, we reduced potential user errors in medication scenarios. The tighter alignment between hardware and software created a cohesive experience that lowered cognitive load for elderly patients and caregivers, improving both safety and daily usability.

These improvements supported the successful launch of Karie Duo, which secured over NOK 10 million in ARR before official release and later grew beyond NOK 35 million in total ARR. In January 2026, Dignio was acquired by Summa Equity for a valuation exceeding NOK 1 billion, reflecting strong market confidence in the platform’s ability to scale connected care within regulated healthcare environments.
